Mini messenger bag

How often do you find yourself scrambling to sew up some "essential" item right before a trip? For whatever reason that kind of thing seems to happen to me almost every time we head out of town. Sometimes it's a gift for someone we're visiting. Other times, it's an all-important Darth Vader costume for a certain special bear.

Our upcoming trip to Disneyland seems to be no exception. This time around, I was the one who needed something! I had somehow forgotten that being pregnant means I have no pockets for holding money, lip balm or even my phone since I'm living in skirts and dresses right now. So, I figured I'd need a small purse to carry all of my essentials as we traverse the Happiest Place on Earth.

Add in the fact that I don't really enjoy speed shopping with my mini entourage in tow, I figured it would be much easier (and far more fun!) for me to simply whip something up.

Enter the mini messenger bag: a cute little messenger bag made entirely of scraps and leftover bits in my stash. The yummy prints are all from the scrap pack I won in the Festival of Scrappiness, courtesy of Badskirt Amy. The gray linen-look and lining fabrics are all JoAnn purchases (I think the polka dot print might be Denyse Schmidt?), leftovers from other projects that have just been waiting to be turned into something fun.

This is my first shot at a quilted bag and since I wanted to keep things simple... and, um, cheap... I didn't use a pattern or a zipper (I didn't have either one on hand). Hook and loop tape does the job, though, and I'm quite pleased with the results!

  1. That is so cute! Love the fabrics. Great idea for when you're out and about, having no pockets is the worst! =D

    1. Thanks, Cherie! I can definitely see myself using this little bag quite a bit after our trip. It will be perfect for taking my kids to the park or even quick trips out for groceries. :)

    1. I always like it when I see a photo of a bag in use so I can get a sense for its size. All those pretty shots on a white background can really leave you wondering! :)

  3. That is adorable! I want one Michelle :) So is this post pre Disney Land? You guys probably get to go there quite a bit. You know I've only been to the happiest place on earth once. It's been ten years since I went! Oh we've gotta make that vacation happen again!

    1. You must go soon! There are so many new things to see this year!!! Cars Land just opened a few weeks ago and I'm guessing your little guys would looooooove it.

Yes, we do go a lot (we don't leave for this trip until Sunday morning). My hubby got me into it when we first started dating, as he is a huge fan. We used to go three times a year but now it's generally two. Our kids are pretty spoiled. ;) Of course, it helps that we live within a day's drive.

Have you been to Disney World? We went for our honeymoon and once more when Miss C. was about 18 months old, but haven't been able to make it back since. We're crossing our fingers that we'll be able to make it out again sometime in the next two years. Those airfares from California are deadly!

I'm glad you like the bag! I have a feeling it's going to end up in regular rotation after our trip. :)

    2. I've never been to Disney World, sadly.

We'll definitely get to Disney Land in the next few years though. We've kind of just held off a bit, we really want to take the kids when they'll all have a blast and we can too. Maybe when they are 8, 6 & 4? (then again who knows if another might be in the mix by then...) we'll see. If we lived within driving distance we would certainly go more often! That's so cool, I'm jealous! Have a blast!

    3. Disney World is such an amazing place. And if you take out the cost of airfare, you can sometimes spend the same amount as a Disneyland trip for tickets and hotel but get more days for your money. We're always dreaming about going back, but those plane tickets are deadly!

As for Disneyland, that sounds like a great age to take them! And I wouldn't worry too much about taking a baby (or even a toddler) along. We've done it many times with our kids and it's not as tough as you might think. I hope you can make it out sooner rather than later! :)

  5. This is so cute {and you're an adorable pregnant lady too!}! Those Denyse Schmidt dots are one of my favorites...I've used almost all of mine lately! I wish we had a JoAnn's here!

We're hoping to venture down to Disney in the fall, so it won't be as hot with two little ones. My parents are big fans, so they are hoping to come too, but my hubby has never been! Have a fabulous time!

    1. Thank you, Jennie! I can't believe you don't have a JoAnn near you! Where do you go when you need something in a pinch?

Fall is a great time to go - we used to do that every year up until a few years ago when I was too pregnant to travel at that time. Now with school on the horizon, our trips are going to be confined to school holidays.

If you do end up going in the fall, you might want to consider Labor Day week. We'd show up at the parks right after Labor Day and it was never too busy. A good indication of how busy it will be is the park hours page on the Disneyland website. Longer operating hours mean bigger crowds.

I know all the Disneyland travel tricks... Feel free to email me if you decide to go and want to know all the inside info on getting the most out of your trip! Maybe I'll have to do a post about that someday. :)

    1. Thanks, Melissa! I'm really pleased with how it turned out, especially since these types of "Oh, I'll just wing it!" projects always have the potential for disaster! :)

    1. Sometimes those projects turn out the best, don't they? Of course, sometimes those last minute projects are major disasters... LOL... but thankfully this one was a good one. :)

  9. This is so cute! I hear you on the maternity = no pockets. What's up with that? I've had four babies and for months at a time was so frustrated. Great job with the bag, it looks perfect for what you need!

    1. I think I own one pair of jeans that has back pockets, but that's it for pockets in my maternity clothes. Of course, it's over 100 degrees all the time now where I live so there's no way I'll be wearing those jeans any time soon! Glad you like the bag! Thanks for stopping by. :)
